A National Augmented Reality Nature Journaling Experience of Students Creative Observations

Having established the first physical Genestreaming Sculpture trail, now…. we are building something ambitious: We are creating an Augmented Reality Genestreaming Sculpture where nature journaling posters from contributing schools become part of the Interactive Augmented Reality experience -- capturing how children see, feel, learn and connect with the natural world around them.  We’ve worked closely with school teachers on a range of projects and we have witnessed that teachers can be very time poor which is why our flexible resource kit as a STEAM project is Multimodal. It combines science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics with a national sculpture trail designed to promote an awareness of conservation, science and first nations culture with school input.  Through a combination of nature journaling resources with cutting edge augmented reality technology this is an educational & environmental initiative shaped by young people’s nature journaling about their region.  The program is designed for whole-school access. Contributing schools receive a coupon that can be shared with teachers and families, allowing the wider school community to engage with the program together. Perfect for schools, homeschooling families, and after-school programs, this flexible resource kit combines drawing, writing, photography, simple field naturalist studies, and hands-on creative activities suitable for a wide range of ages and learning styles.

Nature Journaling Posters & AR

Schools may choose their own nature journaling themes for their posters. We encourage themes that inspire students to explore their surroundings such as “What is in our backyard”.  The ‘Explore Nature Journaling Resource Kit’ has a broad cross section of activities that can be used as study enhancement activities for this theme. Poster dimensions are provided in the Explore Nature Journaling Resource Kit for Schools.  We have had many positive experiences engaging with citizen scientists, First Nations Artists, Elders and conservationists.  We provide further information about this in our program and encourage schools to engage with these inspiring people.

Future Focused Education

Our Resource Kit is a facilitators pack for teachers designed for classroom enrichment. Participating schools become part of a knowledge network, showcasing biodiversity, heritage, and innovation.  As a global educational movement, nature journaling is about contributing to future-focused education which explores: - environmental sustainability - community engagement - participation in a national artwork - students connecting with nature - real-world learning - creativity and expression

Using visual literacy to engage with scientific concepts

The sculpture represents different groups of animals and plants. In connecting to the shared ancestry baseplate, the Genestreaming Augmented Reality Sculpture features 15 petals. Each petal connects to an ancestral line which represents a group of related species.  The scientific and common names of each group of species represented will be written at the base of each petal. Each ring represents a different period of geological time with animated paleo creatures inhabiting the era they lived in millions of years ago…. including Dinosaurs!

The Creators

Mali Moir has an extensive history in the field of scientific illustration and field naturalist projects, an award-winning Botanical Scientific and Natural History artist & teacher working at the National Herbarium of Victoria and Royal Botanic Gardens Vic. Mali’s interest in the areas of conservation and species documentation contributes to her sincere belief that ‘artists make science visible’ to promote the value of engaging in the richness of our natural world.  Ben Beeton has completed over 40 artist residency projects focusing on the ecology, geology and deep time history of natural systems. Ben designed the Genestreaming sculpture whilst at the Australian National University when developing virtual reality experiences for students to explore the Tree of Life. Nature journaling is a daily practice for Ben whose favorite pastime is drawing trees.

What teachers, science communicators & community leaders are saying

This project is about connecting the next generation to the environment through nature journaling and new technology. Discover how teachers, families, and educators are bringing outdoor learning, observation skills, and creative exploration into everyday education.

“You should have seen the students, they just erupted! It just goes to show how interactive education is very important for our younger generation”.
Douglas Kichen.

"In the Genestreaming Augmented Reality Sculptures ..          a whole new world of discovery awaits you".

Wow Wilderness Eco-Projects

"I think that the involvement with the children now brings it down to another generation of people who understand the earth, who can walk on it, who can go into that sculpture look at a petal follow it down and follow the timeline through I'm amazed at how the children have connected very well with it, it will never leave them".
Cr. Sue Leighton

Ravensthorpe Councillor

My background is in teaching, and my passions are art and science. Taking the kids out into the Bush and learning about the flora and fauna, by having the kids drawing what they find or photographing it, looking at it in detail, helps embed that knowledge deeply. The Genestreaming sculpture is such a rich learning tool for children because it has so much embedded in it, it offers a lot, it's a very powerful tool for learning and its beautiful form.
Kier Douthie

Principal of Jerdacuttup Primary School (retired)

"This program is self-motivating fostering a growth mindset that inspires a curiosity lead investigation of the natural world. It offers the highest quality teaching, with the results shared in the most unique form that new technology can supply us with".
